Super Rare Original 1930s Vintage Black Puff Sleeve Old Hollywood Evening Gown With Red And Gold Lamé Appliqué Embroidery By Stamp Taylor
This exquisite gown was made in the 1930s from a stunning knitted satin back crepe textile with a wonderfully usual texture. The gown was cut in the classic 1930s silhouette with short gathered puff sleeves and a figure hugging style. The high neckline allows the strong padded shoulders to shine which are further emphasised by the shirred shoulders. Matching shirring has also been used above and below the waist to create the nipped silhouette that is typical of the period. The real statement design element is the large red and gold lamé appliqué detailing at the waist in the shape of a stylised owl head. An attached fabric tie belt can be tied at the back in either a bow as shown in the photos or in long swags. The skirt falls in beautiful large pleats, created by the shirring below the waist, to give the dress gorgeous movement and swish. The gown fastens with an original metal side zipper and eight fabric covered buttons at the back of the neck. This really is an exceptional piece and it bears the maker’s mark for Stamp Taylor, the label that was named after the glamorous silver screen actress Enid Stamp-Taylor.
Bust: 32” (tight 34”)
Waist: 28” but can be cinched with waist tie
Hips: 40”
Length: 58”
The gown is in very good condition with only a few barely noticeable fabric pulls as pictured and the topmost button has lost its fabric covering.

This garment is available to purchase with or without dress shields. These clever little contraptions have been made by our seamstress to an original 1940s pattern and can be simply attached to your garment by tack stitching at the corners of the underarm seam, pinning (we wouldn’t recommend that, it hurts if it goes wrong, so if you try this, it is at your own risk only) or inserting tiny poppers. They then stand ready to absorb any sweat and body odours as needed and you can simply detach and launder them instead of your garment, saving you a fortune in dry cleaning bills.
They are equally suitable for suits, blazers and dresses and come in two different options:
1. Pure cream cotton for your heavier weight dresses, blazers and suits
or
2. White cotton muslin for lightweight summer dresses (so they don’t show through the fabric)
They are universally sized and super easy to use even for a sewing novice as only a couple of tiny stitches are required at each side to secure them.
We sell Dress Shields as a standalone item or at a discount if you purchase them with a garment. We will select the appropriate type to match the garment you have purchased.
