Stunning Original Vintage 1940s 40s Grey Suit With Double Collar And Button Details
This stunning suit was made in the 1940s from grey (actually very finely striped black and white) wool. It was cut in the classic hourglass silhouette of the period with padded shoulders and a nipped waist. The blazer features some wonderful 1940s detailing with a fabulous double collar with top stitched details. The top stitching continues down the placket as well as on the pockets and also adorns the fabric covered buttons. Five of these beautiful buttons fasten the jacket at the front with two further buttons decorating each of the pockets which feature rounded off tabs. Inside, the blazer is lined in crepe and has a maker’s label for Lou-Art Custom Tailors. The matching skirt fastens with an original metal side zipper and button closure above and features an embroidered arrow head at the front (if preferred, this could be worn at the back instead).
Shoulders: 14 3/4” seam to seam
Waist: 25” with 2-3” room to move the button (it looks like it originally was at 26” as there is a remnant of thread)
Length: 28” plus 2 1/2” hem
The suit is in good condition, however there is a small darn on the sleeve as well as a few faint marks on the skirt which may lift with dry cleaning as pictured. There is also some slight discolouration to the jacket lining.
This garment is available to purchase with or without dress shields. These clever little contraptions have been made by our seamstress to an original 1940s pattern and can be simply attached to your garment by tack stitching at the corners of the underarm seam, pinning (we wouldn’t recommend that, it hurts if it goes wrong, so if you try this, it is at your own risk only) or inserting tiny poppers. They then stand ready to absorb any sweat and body odours as needed and you can simply detach and launder them instead of your garment, saving you a fortune in dry cleaning bills.
They are equally suitable for suits, blazers and dresses and come in two different options:
1. Pure cream cotton for your heavier weight dresses, blazers and suits
2. White cotton muslin for lightweight summer dresses (so they don’t show through the fabric)
They are universally sized and super easy to use even for a sewing novice as only a couple of tiny stitches are required at each side to secure them.
We sell Dress Shields as a standalone item or at a discount if you purchase them with a garment. We will select the appropriate type to match the garment you have purchased.
