Original 1890s Volup Victorian Riding Habit Jacket With Gigot Leg Of Mutton Sleeves
This incredible jacket was made from a thick, highly textured wool crepe in the 1890s. The jacket is cut in a classic double breasted style and fastens with two rows of four faceted glass buttons. It features a super sharp notched lapel collar and huge gigot sleeves, which taper to a tight fit at the cuff. The back of the jacket is adorned with shapely princess seaming to define the waist and a pleated bustle back ideal for accommodating the skirts of the period. Functional waist pockets add a practical feature to this piece. We believe this may have been a riding habit in its time and would be ideal for side saddle riding and re-enactment as well as every day wear. Inside, the jacket is lined in satin and features a maker’s label for Maison Arnaud Freres of Marseille.
