Original 1800s Victorian Raised Flower Pattern Devoré Velvet Cape With Mole Fur Tassels
This incredible cape was made from cotton velvet in the Victorian era. This is one of the most exquisite pieces of Victorian clothing we have handled. The devoré velvet work depicts a delicate floral pattern and the collar, front edges and sleeves have been trimmed with hundreds of beaded mole fur tassels. The bodice of the cape closes with hooks and eyes at the front whilst the back is gathered at the waist attaching the huge sleeves to the bodice and giving a bustle effect to the rear hem. Inside, the cape is lined in black cotton and bears a label for Way Back When Costume Shop. We believe that this original Victorian piece formed part of their inventory at some point and has survived in remarkable condition considering.
The below measurements are with the hooks and eyes closed at the front, however it would look equally lovely worn open.
Bust: 32” tight 33”
Waist: 30”
Length front: 41” including tassels
Length back: 20”
The cape is in good condition with some of eras of slight wear to the velvet as pictured. A number if the tassels are missing, revealing bare patches of lining beneath and the inside lining has holes as seen in the pictures. A few of the hooks and eyes are missing but replacements could easily be sewn in.
