Incredible Original Vintage 1930s 30s Belted Coat With Soutache Embroidery And Huge Bishop Sleeves
I’m not going to lie, this is probably the best coat I have ever handled! It was made in the late 1930s / early 1940s from a warm grey wool. This coat truly is the statement piece of all statement pieces! It features huge bishop sleeves and super strong padded shoulders. Intricate gold coloured soutache embroidery adorns the back and sides of the bodice as well as the bishop sleeves. Within the golden swirls of the soutache work, a second embroidery technique is used to create a boucle type raised texture to some of the leaves in a grey wool. The centre panel of the coat has been maintained plain to elongate the body and ensure a slimming silhouette. The small notched collar has rounded of edges and leads to a single large over stitched fabric covered button that fastens the coat at the neck. Even the embroidery work on this button is superb! A matching fabric belt with a cloth bothered buckle allows the wearer to cinch in the waist to create that classic 1940s Joan Crawford silhouette. Inside, the coat is lined in sumptuous gold satin, with a waist tie for optimum fit. It bears a maker’s label for Inwood of New York. The tailoring on this piece is of such an exquisite quality, it would not surprise me if it was custom made and the label is for the store or tailor.
Bust: 40”

The coat is in good condition however there is a visible mend on the collar which could be covered with a brooch. There are also some surface nibbles as well as a few pinholes near the hem as pictured. There is some wear to belt buckle but it is still functional and some marks to the lining.
