Incredible Original Late 1940s / Early 1950s Sky Blue New Look Wool Suit By Hyde Park Body Drum

This incredible suit was made from sky blue wool in the late 1940s / early 1950s. It was cut in the Dior’s classic New Look silhouette with lightly padded shoulders, a tightly nipped waist and a gently flared skirt. The blazer features a small collar and a fabulous pleated bust yolk that adds a real statement detail to the piece. Six buttons run in a large arrow shaped placket down the front of the blazer and a matching button fastens decorates each sleeve. Clever dart work really cinched in the waist for a fitted look and the jacket hem flares out into a flattering peplum reinforced with padding at the hem. Inside, the blazer is lined in blue crepe and has the maker's label for Hyde Park - Body Drum Skirt as well as the National Recovery Board tag. The matching skirt was cut in the new look flared silhouette which gives it wonderful swish and movement. It has been partially lined in rayon, fastens with an original metal size zipper and button closure and also retains the Drum label.

The Drum Shape Retaining Skirt was an innovative and patented concept at the time. It was uniquely part lined inside to prevent the outer fabric from stretching and designed to never strain, sag or wrinkle. It was famous for never losing its shape and making the very most of the wearer’s shape at the same time.

The suit us in very good condition with only some slight discolouration at the inside of the collar and the underarm lining as pictured.

This garment is available to purchase with or without dress shields. These clever little contraptions have been made by our seamstress to an original 1940s pattern and can be simply attached to your garment by tack stitching at the corners of the underarm seam, pinning (we wouldn’t recommend that, it hurts if it goes wrong, so if you try this, it is at your own risk only) or inserting tiny poppers. They then stand ready to absorb any sweat and body odours as needed and you can simply detach and launder them instead of your garment, saving you a fortune in dry cleaning bills.

They are equally suitable for suits, blazers and dresses and come in two different options:

1. Pure cream cotton for your heavier weight dresses, blazers and suits

or

2. White cotton muslin for lightweight summer dresses (so they don’t show through the fabric)

They are universally sized and super easy to use even for a sewing novice as only a couple of tiny stitches are required at each side to secure them.
