Incredible Original Late 1930s / Early 1940s Burgundy Swing Coat With incredible Hand Buttons
This amazing coat was made from beautifully soft burgundy gabardine between the late 1930s and the early 1940s. It was cut in a classic swing coat silhouette, fitted at the lightly padded shoulders and falling loosely below. The coat features a fabulous flat shoulder yolk from which the fabric falls in hundreds of tiny intricate pleats to add volume and swish to the piece. This shoulder yolk is rounded at the back and ends in sharp points at the front. A small collar leads to three fabric covered buttons that fasten the coat at the neck abd top of the bust. It is these buttons that really are the showstopper on this coat as the are bound in gold metal shaped in the form of a hand!!! There are also functional slit pockets at the waist and the coat is lined in crepe with a warm wool interlining and features a maker’s label for Fontana of California. The tailoring on this coat is utterly breathtaking with some of the nicest detailing we have had the privilege to handle.
Bust: 41”
Shoulders: 16” edge to edge of the flat yolk
Length: 40” plus 2” hem
The coat is in very good condition with only a small seam pop at the shoulder and a few minuscule white spots near the hem as pictured.
