Incredible 1940s 40s Vintage Black Velvet Hat Studio Style By Caspar Davis Of Hollywood
This fabulous hat was made from black felt in the late 1940s. The edge of the hat has been decorated with a sumptuous black velvet, which extends into a larger section at the front of the hat. Delicate ceiling adorns the top of the front of the hat and a large brush decoration adds a real feature. Inside, there is a black grosgrain hat band and a maker’s label for Studio Style designed by Caspar Davis of Hollywood. These hats were fashioned in the style of hats featured in the movies of the time, to give elegant ladies the opportunity to emulate that movie star style.
This hat belonged to the collection of Stephen Furniss, who established the costume department at Bonham’s auction house in the 1970s. He was a prolific collector of 1940s clothing and accessories and a substantial part of his collection was exhibited at the Imperial War Museum in London during the “Forties Fashion and the New Look” exhibition in 1996 and recently in the “Fashion on a Ration” exhibition in 2015.
The hat is flexible in size as it perches loosely on the wearer’s head.
The hat is in very good condition with no issues to note.
