Fabulous Original Vintage Wartime Early 1940s 40s Navy Blue Skirt Suit With Tapering Button Details
This beautiful suit was made from a navy blue wool crepe at the turn of the decade between the late 1930s and the early 1940s, a true wartime piece. It has the classic hourglass silhouette of the period with padded shoulders and a nipped waist. The strong shape is further enhanced by the placement of gorgeous mother of pearl buttons, which taper from a double breasted arranged to a single button at the waist. The large collar has been decorated with three matching buttons on each side, which continues the strong triangularity of the piece. Inside, the blazer is lined in rayon and has a maker’s label for Korrect Fashions as well as some mystery poppers that may once have attached an alternative larger collar (maybe a big fur?) along the neckline. The matching skirt is cut in a slight A line shape with darts at the top and fastens with an original metal side zipper and hook and popper closure above.
Shoulders: 15 3/4” from the edges of the shoulder pads
Length: 30 1/2” + 1 1/2” hem
The suit is in very good condition with only a small mend to the sleeve, a button that has lost most of its mother of pearl centre and very faint discolouration to the skirt that is only noticeable under extremely strong photography lights as pictured.
This garment is available to purchase with or without dress shields. These clever little contraptions have been made by our seamstress to an original 1940s pattern and can be simply attached to your garment by tack stitching at the corners of the underarm seam, pinning (we wouldn’t recommend that, it hurts if it goes wrong, so if you try this, it is at your own risk only) or inserting tiny poppers. They then stand ready to absorb any sweat and body odours as needed and you can simply detach and launder them instead of your garment, saving you a fortune in dry cleaning bills.
They are equally suitable for suits, blazers and dresses and come in two different options:
1. Pure cream cotton for your heavier weight dresses, blazers and suits
2. White cotton muslin for lightweight summer dresses (so they don’t show through the fabric)
They are universally sized and super easy to use even for a sewing novice as only a couple of tiny stitches are required at each side to secure them.
We sell Dress Shields as a standalone item or at a discount if you purchase them with a garment. We will select the appropriate type to match the garment you have purchased.
