Exquisite Original 1930s Vintage Rust Brown Full Length Velvet Coat With Gigot Sleeves
This stunning coat was made in the 1930s from rust brown velvet. It was cut in the classic full length evening coat style of the period giving it a timeless elegance. The collarless neckline fastens with a single hook and a buckle closes the coat at the waist with a small button and loop at the hip to maintain the shape of the coat. The waist buckle fastening gives the piece a wonderful fitted silhouette which skims the hips gently in that typical elegant 1930s line. But the real star of the how are the incredible gigot sleeves, large and puffed at the top with statement seam detailing, before tapering to a fitted cuff. Stunning seam work at the hips adds visual interest to the back of the coat. Inside, the coat is lined in brown crepe with an internal tie for a more tailored fit.
The piece belonged to the late Dorothy Hart, a British high society woman, debutante and wife of a millionaire. Her monthly clothing budget was the modern equivalent of £63,000 so you can just imagine the quality of clothing she was able to purchase! She regularly took trips to Paris and London to select pieces from the latest designer collections and undoubtedly this coat was tailor made for her by expert craftsmen.
