Exceptional Original 1920s Vintage Silk Satin Flapper Dress With Beaded Swallows
This exceptional dress was made in the 1920s from sumptuous glowing black silk satin. It was cut in the classic straight silhouette of the period with small cap sleeves and daring high splits on both sides of the skirt. The front and back of the dress have been adorned with incredible beaded swallows with bright blue eyes. The quality of the beadwork is simply exquisite with such wonderful detail. In between the swifts, black beads create stylised clouds which have been mirrored on the hemline. Gathering at the wearer’s right hip adds a final design flourish to this amazing piece. This piece is such wonderful quality both in the craftsmanship and design, it feels like a couture piece but sadly no maker’s label remains. The dress slides on over the head with a row of poppers on the left hand side for ease of access. There is also a partial integral silk crepe underdress (mainly on the skirt) to protect the outer fabric and to avoid showing too much leg on the daring skirt slits.
Bust: 34” (tight 36”)
Waist: 32”
Hips: 38” measures on the underdress
Length: 41 1/4” plus 11” hem
The dress is in very good condition with only some very minor bead loss as pictured. The underdress needs a seam repair at the shoulders (see picture) but the fabric is stable.
