Breathtaking Original 1940s 40s Vintage Red Gabardine Skirt Suit With Beaded Collar By Chappi
This incredible suit was made from rich red wool gabardine in the 1940s. It was cut in the classic silhouette of the period with strong padded shoulders and a nipped waist. The blazer fastens with beautiful fabric covered buttons in a double breasted layout. Whilst this is a strong design statement in itself, it really is the incredible collar that steals the show! The entirety of the oversized notched lapel collar, which covers the wearer’s shoulders and extends around the back, is covered in intricate midnight blue beadwork. The quality of this piece can simply not be captured in pictures, there is a real weight to the blazer and the tailoring is just exquisite! Small functional slit pockets at the waist add a practical feature and the cuffs are fastened with fabric covered buttons. The inside of the blazer is lined in rich red crepe and it bears the maker’s label for Chappi as well as the retailer’s label for Goldies of Wichita, the Forstmann wool label and the National Recovery Board tag. The matching skirt is cut in a slight A line, is half lined in crepe at the back and fastens with an original metal side zipper and more modern hook closure above.
Shoulders: 16 1/4” seam to seam
Hips: 39” plus 7” of seam allowance that can be let out
Length: 28” plus 2” hem
The suit is in very good condition with only a small darn which could be better executed, a minuscule mark in the beading and a faint mark near the hem as pictured.
