This incredible evening dress was made from black crepe in the late 1930s / early 1940s. It was cut in the classically elegant silhouette of the period with a sweeping floor length skirt and a gently nipped waist. Beautiful gathered sleeves are open ant the bottom to drape elegantly and add a classic period detail and angular gold beads create a wonderful twisted helix pattern at the bust. The low cut back adds a sexy feature and there is a small hook at the top to create an alternative keyhole design (our mannequin’s shoulders were not cooperating). An original fabric waist tie can be used to nip in the waist and can be tied loosely at the front or in a bow at the back. Large inverted pleats create beautiful movement in the sweeping skirt and an original metal side zipper fastens the dress. Hidden inside the skirt seam, there is a maker’s label for Gothé New York, a renowned Manhattan based ready to wear design house, most famous for creating Eleanor Roosevelt’s inaugural gowns.

Bust: 32” (tight 34”)

Waist: 24”

Hips: 36”

Length: 59 1/2” plus 1” hem

The dress is in very good condition with no issues to note.

This garment is available to purchase with or without dress shields. These clever little contraptions have been made by our seamstress to an original 1940s pattern and can be simply attached to your garment by tack stitching at the corners of the underarm seam, pinning (we wouldn’t recommend that, it hurts if it goes wrong, so if you try this, it is at your own risk only) or inserting tiny poppers. They then stand ready to absorb any sweat and body odours as needed and you can simply detach and launder them instead of your garment, saving you a fortune in dry cleaning bills.

They are equally suitable for suits, blazers and dresses and come in pure white cotton.

They are universally sized and super easy to use even for a sewing novice as only a couple of tiny stitches are required at each side to secure them.

We sell Dress Shields as a standalone item or at a discount if you purchase them with a garment. We will select the appropriate type to match the garment you have purchased.
