This amazing suit was made in the 1950s from a beautiful heavy quality worsted wool with a striped texture. The fabric is utterly incredible, it is shot through with red and white silk flecks to give the suit the appearance of being sprinkled with diamond dust! There are more red flecks at the collar and hem of the blazer to give extra emphasis to those areas of the piece. It is almost impossible to describe how luxurious this fabric feels and pictures just cannot do it justice! 

The suit itself is, in classic Lillli Ann style, cut to a more 1940s silhouette with padded shoulders and a nipped waist from which the trademark stiffened Lilli Ann peplum falls in a super flattering shape. The notched lapel collar leads to three fabric covered buttons that fasten the blazer and turn up cuffs finish off the sleeves. Inside, it is lined in crepe and bares the maker’s label for Lilli Ann as well as the very rare Lilli Ann Couture label. 

Adolph Schuman was awarded the use of a select group of luxury French textiles in 1955 for his “advancement of French fabrics and design outside of France”, an award that apparently was only ever given to firms who followed in the French couture tradition. We suspect that the Lilli Ann Couture label relates to this award considering the exquisite quality of the fabric used and the beautiful construction and tailoring of the garment. 

The matching skirt does not disappoint either, being cut in a slight A line and fastening with an original metal side zipper and button closure above.

The suit is in very good condition with only a small amount of pilling and some faint underarm discolouration to the lining as pictured. Considering the condition of this piece, we suspect this suit has barely been worn and saved for best.

This garment is available to purchase with or without dress shields. These clever little contraptions have been made by our seamstress to an original 1940s pattern and can be simply attached to your garment by tack stitching at the corners of the underarm seam, pinning (we wouldn’t recommend that, it hurts if it goes wrong, so if you try this, it is at your own risk only) or inserting tiny poppers. They then stand ready to absorb any sweat and body odours as needed and you can simply detach and launder them instead of your garment, saving you a fortune in dry cleaning bills.

They are equally suitable for suits, blazers and dresses and come in two different options:

1. Pure cream cotton for your heavier weight dresses, blazers and suits

or

2. White cotton muslin for lightweight summer dresses (so they don’t show through the fabric)

They are universally sized and super easy to use even for a sewing novice as only a couple of tiny stitches are required at each side to secure them.
