This incredible hat was made from lilac crepe in the 1940s. It was fashioned as a flat platter hat which sits on the head at a jaunty angle. The fabric has been set in three large pleats to decorate the edge of the platter and there is a cute bow at the back. The top of the hat has been decorated with pale blue feathers abs matching large looped netting. Inside, there is a small panel inside, which allows the hat to be pinned to the wearer’s head as well as a hat elastic. The hat bears the maker’s label for Dolly Varden.

This hat belonged to the collection of Stephen Furniss, who established the costume department at Bonham’s auction house in the 1970s. He was a prolific collector of 1940s clothing and accessories and a substantial part of his collection was exhibited at the Imperial War Museum in London during the “Forties Fashion and the New Look” exhibition in 1996 and recently in the “Fashion on a Ration” exhibition in 2015. This hat was actually one of the pieces exhibited at the Imperial War Museum in 1996 and we have attached a photo of the exibit that was taken at the time. This was one of the star pieces of the collection, designed by the original owner’s favourite milliner.

As the hat perches loosely on the wearer’s head, it is suitable for a variety of head sizes.

The hat is in very good condition with only some slight colour inconsistencies to the fabric. There is also a tiny pinhole near the bow.
