This amazing hat was made from black felt in the 1940s. It was styled as a small toy tilt hat with a tall crown abs a an upturned brim. The crown has been decorated with a black grosgrain hat band and the upturned brim was adorned with a contrasting red grosgrain ribbon. Black veiling with red velvet spots attaches to the back of the hat to add a decorative detail. Below the veiling, a black velvet snood contains the wearer’s hair. Inside, there is a grosgrain band to hold the hat in place, tilted at a jaunty angle.

This hat belonged to the collection of Stephen Furniss, who established the costume department at Bonham’s auction house in the 1970s. He was a prolific collector of 1940s clothing and accessories and a substantial part of his collection was exhibited at the Imperial War Museum in London during the “Forties Fashion and the New Look” exhibition in 1996 and recently in the “Fashion on a Ration” exhibition in 2015.

The hat is flexible in size as it perches loosely on the wearer’s head.

The hat is in very good condition with only a couple of tiny holes in the crown as pictured.
